Van Nostrand is a character in Escape from Pelican Rock Island. Like most characters in that island, their gender depends on your gender.

Van Nostrand is wearing the prison outfit that everyone else in the prison on that island is wearing: a blue shirt with brown pants. Unlike everyone else though, he has paint stains on his shirt. Like some other characters, he has a stubble on his face which appears to be orange, probably because he has orange hair.
Storyline[]
Role on Escape from Pelican Rock Island[]
Day 1[]
Nostrand appears outside when the player goes outside for recreation. He is seen painting something on top of the stairs. The player greets him by asking him what his name is, and he tells the player his name. The player then asks how long he's been here, and Nostrand replies saying that he's been here for so long that he can't even count. The player responds with the fact that they think that there are probably worse locations than the prison, and Nostrand says that the entire prison is crumbling thanks to the sea air. As that happened, one of the officers of the prison tells everyone to fall in line so that the warden can speak to them. Nostrand, along with everyone else, falls in line as the warden walks towards them. As the warden speaks, he notices that they have a new guest and tells everyone to move out of the way so he can go speak with them. Once they go through their little argument, the warden turns back to everyone else. As he talks about how they think that there's still hope behind the walls of the prison, the warden brings up the Booted Bandit, and Big Tuna gets all angry with the player, saying that they set him up. Nostrand and everyone else gets scared and runs over to the player. Big Tuna charges at the player, but gets dragged away by the officer and isn't seen for a very long time. The warden then tells everyone that that's what happens when they misbehave, and then tells them to carry on.
Day 2[]
Day 2 comes and the player goes to Nostrand and asks him what he's painting. Nostrand says that like always, he's painting the city skyline. The player compliments him by saying that his painting looks nice, and Nostrand thanks the player, but he says that he'd love to paint something else. The player asks him what else he'd like to paint, and Nostrand tells them that he'd like to paint something that lives and breathes, kinda like the still life of a flower. the player then tells him that they'll try to find him something like that, and then walks away.
Day 3[]
Day 3 starts and Nostrand appears to have painted a little bit more of the city skyline, but that's it.
Day 4[]
Looks like the skyline is almost fully painted.
Day 5[]
Since the player fully watered the sunflower and made it grow, they give it to Nostrand, saying that he can paint it. Nostrand thanks the player a lot, saying that he's been painting that horizon for 20 years, and then gives you a painting, which was one of his earlier efforts. Nostrand then tells the player that he can help the player with any painting needs. The player then asks Nostrand to paint both the corkscrew pasta and the poptropican head. Nostrand charges the player 13 sticks of gum for both of those, and the player gives it to him. Nostrand tells the player to give him just one night to paint both of those things, and then they walk away.
Day 6[]
Day 6 starts up and Nostrand gives the player the painted dummy head and the painted corkscrew pasta. But then, out of nowhere, the warden walks up to Nostrand and says that he's caught him in the act and that he'll be taking away his privilege to paint because...his shirt wasn't tucked in?? Harsh. Nostrand tries to stop him by saying that is shirt is too short, but the warden takes away his privilege to paint anyways, and leaves Nostrand with nothing.
Day 7[]
Nostrand talks about how the fact that he lost his painting privileges can't be good for his upcoming parole hearing, and that's it. That is the last time we see Van Nostrand in the prison.
Out of the prison[]
Nostrand is seen standing on Main Street wearing different clothes. He calls the player a life saver and thanks them for everything.
Trivia[]
- The painting given to you by Nostrand is signed “Patches” – the name of another prisoner. This may not be a mistake: if you check the prisoner files, Van Nostrand was incarcerated for copyright infringement, so Patches probably did paint that picture. But because Van Nostrand claims the work of others as his/her own, she/he will tell you it is “an old one of mine“.
- The bland lady on the second floor of City Hall of Goofball Island mentions Van Nostrand.
