Simon Cobb (later Sir Simon Cobb) is the main protagonist of the Astro-Knights Island book. He was a stable boy who worked in the stables outside Ye Olde Rumour Mille. He is one of the main protagonists, along with Alice.
Characteristics[]
History[]
Simon worked as a stable boy for a man named Edmund, the stable master. He worked with another stable boy named Tobias (who was 27). Simon really hated his job, and dreamed of being a knight. He admired the three Astro-Knights. Alice is his best friend. It's unknown what happened to his parents.
Personality[]
He's pragmatic, noting he "never had power in my hut, anyway. And you don’t need electricity to clean out a stable."
While Alice is more open to wild stories and fantastical possibilities, Simon often expresses skepticism. He sometimes speaks in dry sarcasm. However, his curiosity often gets the better of him, leading him to investigate mysteries and ultimately embark on the quest.
He initially doesn't want to go to the Mordred Museum, stating he doesn't "care about that guy," but he goes because it's Alice's turn to pick. He shows loyalty and concern for Alice throughout their journey, ensuring her safety and fighting for her to be knighted alongside him.
Despite his initial humble background and some moments of doubt ("I’m just a stable boy. Did I really think I could fly to the stars and rescue the Princess?"), Simon demonstrates increasing bravery and determination. He steps up when no one else will to rescue the Princess, faces terrifying creatures like space sharks and the Tiger Copter, and ultimately confronts Mordred.
Simon uses his wit and observation skills to solve problems. He figures out how to use the mechanical mouse, deduces how to navigate the geysers, and quickly grasps the mechanics of the alien ship. He's quick to suggest strategies in battle.
Simon's Strengths[]
- Brave and Courageous: Despite his initial self-doubt, Simon consistently demonstrates bravery when faced with danger. He's willing to put himself at risk to protect others and pursue his goals.
- Determined and Persistent: Simon is highly motivated to achieve his dream of becoming a knight. He doesn't give up easily, even when faced with setbacks and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
- Resourceful and Adaptable: Simon is good at thinking on his feet and finding creative solutions to problems. He uses his knowledge of the stables and his climbing skills to his advantage.
- Loyal and Compassionate: He's a loyal friend to Alice and shows concern for her well-being. He also demonstrates compassion for others, including the Princess.
- Skilled with Horses: His experience in the stables has given him a deep understanding of horses, which proves valuable in certain situations.
- Quick Thinker: He can come up with plans and strategies in the moment, adapting to changing circumstances.
Simon's Weaknesses[]
- Introverted and Socially Awkward: Simon struggles with social interactions and prefers the company of horses to people. This can sometimes make it difficult for him to communicate effectively or assert himself.
- Self-Doubt and Insecurity: He often second-guesses his abilities and lacks confidence in himself, despite his bravery. This can sometimes hold him back or make him hesitant.
- Easily Frustrated: Simon can become frustrated easily, especially when dealing with people. This can sometimes lead to him being impatient or short-tempered.
- Naive/Idealistic: While admirable, his idealized view of knighthood can sometimes blind him to the complexities of situations or the flaws of others. He can be a bit gullible.
Storyline[]
Relationships[]
Alice[]
Simon and Alice are best friends. They try to spend as much time together as possible, and they both relate to their unfortunate living conditions and jobs. Alice sneaks food out of the castle for Simon. When Mordred attacked the Castle, Simon risked his life to make sure she was safe. When Simon complimented Alice, she blushed.
Simon and Alice differ as Simon respects more traditional heroes and ideas like the Astro-Knights and the royals, while Alice finds unconventional things like Mordred, his inventions, and mythical creatures fascinating.
Astro-Knights[]
Simon admires the Astro-Knights very much, and dreamed of being a squire for them.
King and Queen of Arturus[]
Simon felt bad for the king and queen when he noticed they were heartbroken after Elyana was kidnapped. This inspired him to volunteer to rescue Elyana.
Elyana[]
Simon had never been up close to Elyana until he and Alice save her from Mordred.
Merlin[]
Simon liked Merlin well enough.
Rose[]
When Rose kissed him on the forehead, he blushed.
Mordred/Binary Bard[]
Initially, Simon is very skeptical of Mordred. He considers the stories about him to be "crazy stories" and "a bunch of nonsense."
He looks down on Mordred's followers, thinking they are "fools."
He clearly prefers the traditional knights, like Sir Pelleas, Sir Cador, and Sir Gawain, viewing them as the true heroes.
As the story progresses, Simon becomes increasingly confused by the conflicting information about Mordred.
By the end, Simon presents an antagonistic view of Mordred, and declares that he is there to defeat him.
Trivia[]

- Simon is not impressed by Mordred, worshipping the three knights instead.
- As peasants, Simon and Alice rarely got days off. When they did, they tried to spend it together.

Quotes[]
“Give me a break. The sun’s not even up all the way.”
“Just watch. I’m going to be a squire someday. I’m not going to spend my whole life mucking out stables. I’m going to have a horse of my own.”
“Muck, muck, muck, oh yes, it’s time to muck.”
“Well, if the knights really are going after Mordred, I’m sure they’ll get him.”
“I may be a stable boy now, but I don’t plan to be one forever. And none of your guards are brave enough to go, but I will. I’m not afraid.”
“Listen, you talk to these people. I’ll be hanging around in the rafters.”
