Pat McGonagle aka Patches is a character in Escape from Pelican Rock Island. Like most characters in that island, their gender depends on your gender

Patches is wearing the prison jumpsuit that everyone else in the prison on that island is wearing: a blue shirt with brown pants. Patches has dark skin with freckles on both of his cheeks, as well as a light-gray beard and light-gray hair on his head.

Role on Escape from Pelican Rock Island[]
Day 1[]
Patches is seen outside standing next to the warden's statue when the player goes outside for recreation. The player greets him by saying hello, and he happily replies back by saying that his name is Patches. The player gets curious about the bird on top of his head, and asks Patches if the bird is his. He says that he found her with a broken wing one day and decided to take her home. He then says that she's perfectly healthy now, but unfortunately has forgotten how to fly. As that happened, one of the officers of the prison tells everyone to fall in line so that the warden can speak with them. Patches tells the player to not say anything is he's not supposed to, as the warden walks right out of the prison. As the warden speaks, he notices that they have a new guest and tells everyone to move out of the way so that he can go speak to them. Once they go through their little argument, the warden turns back to everyone else. As he talks about how they think that there's still hope behind the walls of the prison, the warden brings up the Booted Bandit, and Big Tuna gets all angry with the player, saying that they set him up. Everyone else gets scared and runs over to the player. Big Tuna charges at you, only to be stopped and dragged away by an officer of the prison. The warden then tells everyone that that's what happens when they misbehave, and then tells them to carry on. While Patches isn't seen when the player goes to work, he is seen when the player goes to lunch. He is seen sitting across from Marion, saying that meal-time is the best time of the day. The player sits down next to both of them and takes a bite of the food at the table, only for them to immediately spit it out and call it disgusting. Les Moreland reminds the player that the walls of the prison are crumbling, and Sal Moreland adds onto that by saying the walls are crumbling down, and that they would be able to chisel their way out. Patches tells the player that all they need to do that is to get something metal, and Patches will help them get a second spoon if they give him 3 sticks of gum that the player got from work. The player give them to him, and asks how they're gonna pull this off so that they can get seconds. Patches tells the player that he'll cause a distraction, giving the player enough time go get another spoon. He then shouts out that his stomach hurts, and one of the guards says that he'll go look at the disturbance at the table. The player runs over and gets another spoon, while the guard asks what's wrong with him. A few seconds later, the guard notices that Patches was faking it the whole time, and says that if this happens again, then Patches will spend the night in solitary. Soon after that, Patches is ordered to go to his cell and go to bed.
Day 2[]
Day 2 starts and Patches is seen standing in the same place as day 1. The player asks him what he's doing, and he says that he's just feeding the birds, and then throws out a handful of birdseed. A seagull swoops down and starts eating up the birdseed, and while that is happening, the player remembers that they can get a job at the kitchen if they get 3 caged free eggs. The player gets an egg from the seagulls nest, right as the seagull flies right back up to it's nest. The player then goes back down to Patches and collects a bird seed that the seagull didn't eat. The player asks Patches if he's gonna feed them anymore, and Patches says that he'll do it the next day. The player goes to lunch and sees Patches sitting in the same spot as he did on day 1. Patches says that the food has looked the exact same way as it has for years. After that, Patches goes to his cell and goes to bed.
Day 3[]
Day 3 starts and Patches is seen standing in the same place. The player asks what's he's doing, and he says that he's just feeding the birds, and then throws out some more birdseed. The seagull from yesterday swoops down from a different spot, and the player goes up and grabs a second egg. Lunch starts and Patches says the same exact thing, until he's told to go to bed.
Day 4[]
Day 4 starts and Patches yet again feeds the birds, and the seagull flies down from a different spot and eats up the birdseed, while the player climbs up and gets the 3rd and final egg that they need. Then, Patches talks about how is parole hearing is coming up, and hopefully he can get out of the prison this time. Lunch time comes and Patches doesn't change what he says or where he sits. But while the player is getting their job in the kitchen, they turn on the fan and stir the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes get sucked up and drop onto the plate that the player eats at, causing both Patches and Marion to be startled. Patches then says that they got a second helping, and then is told to go to bed.
Day 5[]
Day 5 starts and Patches just talks about his parole hearing again and how it's coming up soon. Lunch comes up and Patches just says the same exact thing that he has been: how the food has looked the exact same for years. Then Patches goes to bed.
Day 6[]
Day 6 starts up and Patches has nothing new to say at recreation. He must be extremely excited about his parole hearing because he keeps on talking about it a recreation. Lunch comes and nothing changes to his character. And then he goes to bed.
Day 7[]
Day 7 starts, and his character finally has a change. In recreation, he still talks about his parole hearing, but says that he's got his parole hearing again tomorrow. He then says that he's been going to those so long that he forgot how to lie at them. Lunch starts, and he still says the same thing, but the player had a night visit to the ventilation shaft and made the vents be open to Florian's spot. The player goes into the kitchen and turns on the fan, then begins to stir the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes get sucked up and splat all over Florian's head, causing a food fight to start, and for everybody in the lunch room to participate in it. An officer of the prison eventually puts Florian down, and demands lockdown for everyone.
Day 8[]
The player tells Patches that today might be the last time they talk, as the player and two other guys are escaping that day. Patches says that it's been good to know you, and that you give him hope that there's still life outside the walls of the prison. The player says that he'll miss both Patches and the bird, and Patches replies by saying that the bird will miss the player as well, and maybe Patches will convince her to fly away with the player. As that happened, both Big Tuna and Florian Fosbury show up at the door, looking for revenge. Big Tuna tells the player that there's no escaping what they'll do to them. The player runs behind Patches and asks him if he's got some birdseed on him. Patches happily throws some onto Florian and Big Tuna. At first it doesn't stop them, but then the seagull from earlier and Patches' bird fly in and peck at them, causing them to run away. The player runs inside of the prison and that's the last time we see Patches inside the prison.
Out of the prison[]
Patches appears on Main Street with different clothes on. Pat calls the player a lifesaver and thanks them a lot.
