Alice (later Sir Alice) is the secondary protagonist of the Astro-Knights Island book. She was a scullery maid who worked in the Castle of Arturus. She is one of the main protagonists, along with Simon Cobb.
Characteristics[]
History[]
Alice mentioned that her father was a thief, and that she learned how to steal from him. It's unknown what happened to him, but she is an orphan now. Alice worked as a scullery maid for a woman named Mary, the Caste Cook. Mary was very rude to her. Alice really hated her job. Simon is her best friend.
Personality[]
Alice isn't afraid to step outside her comfort zone. Though she starts as a scullery maid, she dreams of more and actively pursues a life of adventure.
She's the more daring of the duo, often pushing Simon to explore and face the unknown. Alice is highly curious and inquisitive, always seeking information, whether it's through gossiping at the mill or reading books in the castle library. Her past, including a thief father, has made her quick-witted and practical, unafraid to bend the rules when necessary (like "swiping" the key).
Alice is an incredibly loyal and supportive friend to Simon, consistently encouraging him and standing by him. Her optimism often lifts Simon's spirits when he feels defeated. She's also observant and perceptive, quickly piecing together clues and understanding complex situations.
While generally brave, Alice does have a notable fear of the dark, and her adventurous spirit can sometimes border on impulsiveness or recklessness. She initially finds the chaos of Mordred's attack "exciting," which shows a hint of thrill-seeking.
Alice has a deep fascination with Mordred and his inventions, even romanticizing him for a time, believing he rescued the Princess out of love. She genuinely appreciates how his technology made her life easier. However, she's also driven by truth, willing to adjust her beliefs when presented with new evidence, as seen when she accepts the Princess's true account of Mordred's villainy. Her attachment to Merlin highlights her compassionate side.
Alice's Strengths[]
- Resourceful and Adaptable: Alice is incredibly resourceful, able to make the most of any situation and find creative solutions to problems. Her past experiences, including learning from her father, have made her adaptable and quick-thinking.
- Brave and Courageous: While she has a fear of the dark, Alice doesn't let it paralyze her. She consistently demonstrates bravery in the face of danger, standing up for herself and others.
- Loyal and Supportive: She is a loyal friend to Simon and is always there to support him. She's also shown to be compassionate and caring.
- Witty and Sarcastic: Alice has a sharp wit and a sarcastic sense of humor, which she often uses to lighten the mood or tease Simon playfully.
- Observant and Perceptive: She's good at noticing details and reading situations, which often proves helpful in uncovering clues or understanding others' motivations.
Alice's Weaknesses[]
- Fear of the Dark: Her fear of the dark is a significant weakness that can sometimes hinder her or make her hesitant.
- Impulsive: Alice can sometimes be impulsive, acting before fully thinking things through. This can lead to mistakes or put her in danger.
- Reckless: Her bravery can sometimes border on recklessness, as she's willing to take significant risks.
- Excitement at chaos: While empathetic to the Princess, she admits to finding the initial attack exciting, showing she's a thrill-seeker.
Storyline[]
Relationships[]
Simon Cobb[]
Simon and Alice are best friends. They try to spend as much time together as possible, and they both relate to their unfortunate living conditions and jobs. Alice sneaks food out of the castle for Simon. When Mordred attacked the Castle, Simon risked his life to make sure she was safe. When Simon complimented Alice, she blushed.
Simon and Alice differ as Simon respects more traditional heroes and ideas like the Astro-Knights and the royals, while Alice finds unconventional things like Mordred, his inventions, and mythical creatures fascinating.
Astro-Knights[]
Alice blushes when Sir Cador bows to her.
King and Queen of Arturus[]
Alice serves the king and queen as a scullery maid. Alice steals food from them, thinking they have more food than they need.
Elyana[]
Alice has been around Elyana since she lives and works in the castle. Alice has watched Elyana eat, and knows she's a messy eater.
Merlin[]
Alice finds Merlin (and all of Mordred’s inventions) fascinating, and she grew attached to him. She ran back for Merlin after Mordred shot the bird down.
Mordred/Binary Bard[]
Alice is genuinely fascinated by Mordred and his inventions. She misses the conveniences his technology provided to Arturus. She actively seeks out information about him, wanting to visit the Museum of Mordred and reading books about his inventions. She sees him as a "real genius," admiring his technological skills.
Alice has a tendency to romanticize Mordred, particularly in relation to Princess Elyana. She imagines a romantic escape where Mordred rescues the princess out of love. She's open to the idea that the Princess "liked" Mordred in a romantic way, even when Simon finds the idea "gross."
Alice is determined to uncover the truth about Mordred. She pushes Simon to investigate, leading them to the museum and other clues. She is the first to make the connection between the Binary Bard and Mordred.
Even though she holds onto a romanticized view for a while, she is willing to follow the evidence. When the Princess states that Mordred captured her, and that he is evil, Alice accepts that her romantic vision of Mordred was incorrect. Even when the truth is revealed, Alice still wants to understand why the Princess went with Mordred.
